20 Conversation Starting Questions for Writers or Creatives

This week I’m in the throes of my favorite annual conference: the Catholic Writers Guild live conference in Chicago, IL. I love this conference for so many reasons, but the most significant is that I always leave knowing that I am exactly where God wants me to be.

This call to write is one I have metaphorically wrestled with over the last few years. My personality is such that when things get difficult, my default is to throw up my hands and give up. I start hearing an inner dialogue that says things like, “This isn’t the right time to compose this,” or “See? This is difficult because you’re no good at it.” The worst lie I hear is, “It’s too much and you can’t do it perfectly, so don’t bother trying at all.”

When I stop to really think about it, I know that these lies come from the Devil. I also know that he targets the area of our lives that are the greatest threat to him. When I am in the best possible spiritual place, the more obstacles I encounter, the more I recognize this truly is my calling in life.

Coming to all of these realizations on my own can be a slow and arduous process, though. The true blessing of the CWG live conference is that I get to hear a different set of voices, full of the love of God, all reminding me of this beautiful (though sometimes challenging) call on my life. The best part? These voices aren’t even inside my head!

Writing can be lonely work, so I believe wholeheartedly in the importance of building a writing community. This year, I served on the conference committee as the Coordinator of Fun (no, I didn’t make up this title). Part of my role included creating conversation-starter cards for the tables to facilitate attendees getting to know each other.

If you decide to start a writers group, or if you get to serve as Coordinator of Fun for your existing group, here’s the list of conversation starters for writers, creatives, or anyone you meet!
